Robert has been involved in IoT standards for 20 years, including the IEEE, the Connectivity Standards Alliance (formerly Zigbee Alliance), the IETF, the Thread Group and the Bluetooth SIG. He was a MAC and Security Technical Editor for the IEEE 802.15.4-2006 standard and the primary editor for the security specification for the Thread specification. He was Chair of the Zigbee Security Task Group and Co-chair of the Zigbee IP Working Group.

He has also been involved in developing standards for energy management, including Zigbee Smart Energy and the IEEE P2030.5 protocol. He was also architect for the first 802.15.4 radio incorporating a microcontroller on a single chip.
