Semtech Corporation (Nasdaq: SMTC), a supplier of high-performance analog and mixed-signal semiconductors and advanced algorithms, announced that a state-of-the-art metering solution based on Semtech´s LoRa® devices has been developed as part of the MeDa project for one of Germany´s energy companies with Seluxit (Nasdaq: SLXIT), a developer of Internet of Things (IoT) solutions, the company said.
The MeDa meter leverages a number of the advantages of the LoRaWAN® protocol enabling consumers to change wasteful energy habits and save money.
The deployment of the MeDa smart meter across Germany is increasing following the rollout that began in November of 2018, with several hundred thousand units of the total 6.4 million currently planned for deployment. The MeDa meter leverages LoRa-based solutions from Seluxit to provide real-time data monitoring of energy usage and proven connectivity to the Cloud for long-range data transfer.

LoRa Alliance™ to Highlight Key Deployments during China Utility Week
FREMONT, Calif. – April 11, 2019 – The LoRa Alliance™, the global association of companies backing the open LoRaWAN™ protocol for Internet of Things (IoT) low-power wide-area networks (LPWANs), today announced that LoRaWAN is increasingly being adopted in China for large deployments in smart energy and utilities applications. With utilities now representing the largest market for LoRaWAN in China, the LoRa Alliance will highlight key examples during China Utility Week, April 15-16, 2019, at the Shanghai International Sourcing Exhibition Center.
The de facto industry standard for LPWAN technology, LoRaWAN is an open-source protocol based on industry collaboration that is currently being deployed to connect millions of end devices worldwide. Its inherent benefits make it an optimal choice for smart metering, smart water and gas monitoring, and related uses. The protocol supports high network uptimes by enabling firmware updates over the air (FUOTA) and offers different, scalable network deployment models to provide freedom of choice for both public and private business networks.

Further strengthening its position in the utilities space, the LoRa Alliance and the DLMS User Association (DLMS UA), a non-profit organization driving utilities and meter manufacturers to develop and support a standard for smart meter data exchange, recently announced a liaison agreement under which the two organizations will define a new Device Language Message Specification (DLMS) communication profile for LoRaWAN. Using DLMS-over-LoRaWAN will allow utilities to achieve network connectivity that supports smart metering use cases across many different IoT applications.
At China Utility Week, LoRa Alliance member company Alibaba Group will participate in the conference program. Hao Tan, Alibaba Cloud IoT Senior Expert, will speak at a session titled “How LoRaWAN Brings Benefit to Smart Utilities Projects in China,” scheduled for Monday, April 15, 9:50-10:10 a.m. In addition, a number of LoRa Alliance members will be on hand to further validate the progress that LoRaWAN continues to make in the smart utilities and energy markets.

LoRa Alliance and DLMS User Association to Bring Internet of Things to Utilities
Organizations jointly developing DLMS-over-LoRaWAN™ to support smart metering use cases
Fremont, Calif. – April 3, 2019 – The LoRa Alliance™, the global association of companies backing the open LoRaWAN™ protocol for the Internet of Things (IoT) low-power wide-area networks (LPWANs), and the DLMS User Association (DLMS UA), a non-profit organization driving utilities and meter manufacturers to develop and support a standard for smart meter data exchange, today announced that they have signed a liaison agreement to define a new DLMS communication profile for LPWAN technologies such as LoRaWAN. Additionally, the two organizations will share knowledge, develop documentation and jointly educate the market ecosystem about the benefits of using the DLMS application protocol and data model over LoRaWAN networks.
“With more than 500 members, over 100 LoRaWAN network operators and coverage in over 100 countries, LoRaWAN is the most adopted LPWAN protocol for the IoT,” said Donna Moore, CEO and Chairwoman of the LoRa Alliance. “DLMS is a well-recognized application standard for utilities worldwide. By using the open LoRaWAN network protocol, utilities will profit from its unique benefits, such as flexibility in choice of network models and having a best-in-class certification program for end devices. LoRaWAN’s low power consumption and deep penetration are key aspects that will allow utilities to deploy long-lifetime IoT devices in buildings and underground, and use these to connect assets, create new services and accelerate their digitization.”
By using DLMS over LoRaWAN networks, utilities will achieve network connectivity that supports smart metering use cases – gas, electricity, thermal energy and water – across many different IoT applications. This will allow utilities to increase services and integration into smart homes, buildings, industries and even cities.
