Semtech has announced two new series of free educational tools to help designers learn about LoRaWAN and how to implement it in design, especially for IoT devices.

Low-power wide-area networks (LPWANs) are a necessary component in many IoT or industrial IoT applications. You already know there are many options when it comes to your LPWAN of choice. Today, we’re taking a look at LoRaWAN, one of those choices, and the one that seems to be moving at the fastest pace. Test programs aim to enhance ease of deployments.

Claiming that the internet of things (IoT) is reaching a tipping point, the LoRa Alliance announced that it has more than 100 networks operating around the world. It plans to expand certification and testing programs this year to ease deployments, which it claims already cover millions of end nodes.

For anyone who gets their hands dirty with low-power, wide-area networks (LPWANs), one of the big questions of the moment is whether the cellular industry’s stampede into this market — with the development and launch of the NB-IoT and LTE-M standards — will flatten the non-cellular technologies that preceded them. Chief among those are Sigfox, which comes from the French company of the same name, and LoRa (or LoRaWAN, to give the network protocol its correct name), whose main backer remains Californian chipmaker Semtech.
