Recently, a seven-story, five-star restaurant in Dubai deployed GND’s LoRa-based solutions into its kitchens and refrigerators. Technology company Connexin is working on the project with Icosa Water with the aim of optimising the efficiency of the network.

A spokesperson for Connexin said the first trial has begun, with the system going live for about 100 Arad smart water meters in homes in the region. The network is capable of supporting thousands of devices and, depending on feedback, the project is likely to be scaled up in the future.

After almost 2 years, the world record of 702 km (436 miles) has been broken. Not once but twice. For a long time this record which was set on 26th of August 2017, seemed nearly impossible to break, until the Servet IV mission was launched. On 13th of July 2019, the record was broken by 39 km, setting a new record distance of 741 km. Interestingly, this record only held for 5 hours as another new world record was set with an astonishing distance of 766 km (476 miles).

LoRaWAN is a Low Power, Wide Area (LPWA) networking technology, designed for low-powered devices to communicate with Internet-connected application over long range wireless connections using the unlicensed ISM radio bands. The LoRaWAN protocols are defined by the LoRa Alliance and formalized in the LoRaWAN Specification which can be downloaded on the LoRa Alliance website. The Things Network runs the world’s largest open LoRaWAN network, currently available in over 100 countries around the world.

With the purpose that LoRaWAN serves, it is important to have an understanding of the things that are confusing. Here are some common misconceptions about LoRaWAN.

For all the experience of LTE and excitement of 5G, the IoT market has been propped by low-power wide-area (LPWA) technologies. The concept of smart-anything as the prerequisite for industrial change – in buildings, cities, manufacturing, logistics, agriculture – has gained credence, in large part, because of humble LPWA connectivity, and not these other racier technologies.

But there are a number of LPWA variants out there: principally, the pioneer standards LoRaWAN and Sigfox in the blue corner, and the new cellular heavyweights LTE-M and NB-IoT in the red corner.

LoRa Alliance is made up of more than 500 member companies working toward large-scale deployment of the Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) by promoting the LoraWan open standard.

At a time when all private telecom operators like Vodafone Idea, Reliance Jio and Airtel are preparing to give a push to their Internet of Things business through narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) technology, players like Tata Communications and SenRa are also making efforts to build a parallel network, called Low Power Wide Area Network based on LoRaWAN technology, to drive India’s IoT ecosystem, mainly targeting Modi government’s projects like Smart City Mission and Swatch Bharat.

Three quarters of the IoT market will be given over to low-power wide-area (LPWA) network solutions, compared with just one quarter for high-bandwidth low-latency 5G applications.
