Munich, Germany – June 19, 2024 – The LoRa Alliance^®, the global association of companies backing the open LoRaWAN^® standard for internet of things (IoT) low-power wide-area networks (LPWANs), today announced the winners of its annual Contribution Awards during a live ceremony at LoRaWAN Live Munich. The awards recognize individuals and companies for their leadership, service and contributions to the LoRa Alliance for the development and promotion of the LoRaWAN standard over the past year.

“These awards celebrate the relentless efforts and achievements of our distinguished members who drive the continuous innovation and growth of the LoRaWAN standard,” said Donna Moore, CEO and Chairwoman of the LoRa Alliance. “Over the past year, leaders within the Alliance came together for meaningful collaborations, spearheading industry innovation and advancing the LoRaWAN standard. Their dedication and hard work have catapulted LoRaWAN to new heights within the LPWAN and IoT markets.”

The Contribution Awards is an annual recognition honoring members’ outstanding leadership, service and contributions to the LoRa Alliance. Here is the complete list of winners.

Lifetime Achievement Award

• Olivier Seller, Semtech: As one of the inventors of LoRa^® technology, Vice-Chair of the Technical Committee and alternate to the Board of Directors, Olivier is the editor of the LoRaWAN link-layer (L2) specification. He has made significant contributions to the direction and development of the L2 specification, NetID and several other specs, and he was instrumental to LoRaWAN’s recognition as a standard by ITU-T. He has also supported the development of numerous technical recommendations regarding the proper implementation of the LoRaWAN standard.

• David Tholl, TEKTELIC: David has demonstrated great dedication to advancing LoRaWAN technology and standards, which have contributed to making LoRaWAN a secure, reliable and trusted IoT technology. His expertise, vision and extensive efforts on behalf of the Technical Committee and Regional Parameters Working Group, of which he is the current Chair, have significantly influenced the growth and success of the LoRa Alliance and the LoRaWAN technology. 

Corporate Award

• Xiamen Milesight IoT Co., Ltd.: As one of the early adopters of LoRaWAN technology in China, Milesight has been consistently enthusiastic and proactive in sharing and promoting LoRaWAN technology to expand the ecosystem. The company actively educates the market on LoRaWAN technology in various languages.
• Seeed Technology Co., Ltd: Seeed Studio is committed to making LoRaWAN the LPWAN standard on a global scale through advanced technology development and participating in numerous alliance committees and events. Violet Su, Business Development Manager at Seeed Studio, served as Co–Event Chair for this year’s LoRaWAN Live Munich.
• ZENNER: As an active participant within and an advocate for the LoRa Alliance, ZENNER holds various leadership roles on several committees. ZENNER USA’s President, Richard Sanders, serves as a board member and treasurer of the Alliance and strongly promotes LoRaWAN technology in the U.S. market.

Leadership Award

• Geoffroy de Guillebon of Semtech for leading the CSMA Task force and driving publication of Technical Recommendation 013 on enabling CSMA for LoRaWAN.
• Norbert Herbert of Actility SA for spearheading the establishment of and chairing the new Walk/Drive/Fly-by Task Force to develop LoRaWAN “last mile” coverage extension.
• Telemaco Melia of Echostar Mobile, Ltd. for serving on the Board of Directors and leading the Satellite Task Force to advance the NTN LoRaWAN satellite market.
• Daniel Quant of Multi-Tech Systems, Inc. for his strong advocacy of the LoRaWAN standard as a LoRaWAN Ambassador, former Chair of the Smart Industry Working Group and current Chair of the Marketing Committee.
• Boris Stöckermann of ZENNER for his work as Chair of the Smart Cities Working Group, member of the Marketing Committee and participation across several task forces within the Alliance.

Distinguished Service Award

• Ken Lynch of Netmore: Ken has elevated LoRaWAN marketing and amplified Alliance messages through his work on the Marketing Committee and the Utilities and Buildings working groups, as well as serving as a LoRaWAN ambassador. He strives to benefit LoRaWAN and the LoRa Alliance by ensuring its messaging aligns to end users in key market segments.
• Martin von der Ohe of Lacuna Space Ltd.: Martin has been instrumental in the Regulatory Working Group effort on European harmonization for satellite in the 860–870MHz band and continuously contributing to lobbying CEPT to enable regulation for satellite to SRD communications and secure access for LoRaWAN from CEPT.
• Itziar de la Torre of IMST GmbH: Itziar has made remarkable contributions to LoRaWAN Device Certification efforts in the areas of training, test solutions and test solution validation. She provides comprehensive training for the LoRaWAN Certification Test Tool through webinars and in-person trainings at LoRaWAN Live events.
• Stefan Schweiger of Bechtle AG: Stefan is a strong advocate for LoRaWAN, proactively promoting its benefits to the market. He actively drives key connections within the Alliance ecosystem.

Ecosystem Accelerator Award

This award recognizes the LoRa Alliance members who recruited the most new members to join the Alliance and continuously expand the LoRaWAN ecosystem.

• Olivier Seller, Semtech: Als einer der Erfinder der LoRa^®-Technologie, stellvertretender Vorsitzender des Technischen Ausschusses und stellvertretendes Mitglied des Verwaltungsrats ist Olivier der Herausgeber der Spezifikation der LoRaWAN-Verbindungsschicht (L2). Er hat maßgeblich zur Ausrichtung und Entwicklung der L2-Spezifikation, NetID und verschiedener anderer Spezifikationen beigetragen und war maßgeblich an der Anerkennung von LoRaWAN als Standard durch die ITU-T beteiligt. Updates include new capabilities that streamline the process to make certification faster and easier

Fremont, Calif. – June 3, 2024 – The LoRa Alliance^®, the global association of companies backing the open LoRaWAN^® standard for the internet of things (IoT) low-power wide-area networks (LPWANs), today made multiple announcements related to expanding and enhancing the LoRaWAN Certification Program available as of June 2024:

• Addition of LoRaWAN Relay feature testing as part of end-device certification;
• Accreditation of DEKRA’s Atibaia, Brazil, facility as a LoRa Alliance Authorized Test Lab (ATL), the first ATL in Latin and South America;
• The launch of the LoRaWAN Web Certification System (LWCS), which now automates the certification process; and
• The introduction of LoRa Alliance member self-testing of end devices.

The updates demonstrate the maturity of the LoRaWAN Certification Program and provide OEMs multiple approaches to certify their devices, meeting market requirements for tested devices. Achieving certification also allows products to be featured in the LoRaWAN Marketplace, an online resource where end users can research and find where to purchase certified products and services.

“The simple fact is that IoT needs certified devices to ramp to billions of sensor deployments,” said Donna Moore, CEO and Chairwoman of the LoRa Alliance. “The tremendous benefit of certification – knowing that devices are correctly configured and will perform as intended – truly underlies the market’s trust in a technology’s ability to scale. LoRaWAN already has the most certified devices and the largest variety of certified devices in the LPWAN space, and the programs announced today follow through on our commitment to continuously accelerate and simplify the certification process for end-device manufacturers. Additionally, we’re excited to have a new ATL in Brazil to expedite the certification process in that region.”

The addition of the Relay feature to LoRaWAN Certification testing strengthens LoRaWAN Certification by ensuring that end devices are compliant with the feature as defined in the LoRaWAN standard. Relay is a critical feature for utilities and satellites in particular to amplify and extend the reach of LoRaWAN signals, enabling communication over greater distances and through obstacles like buildings and terrain that can impede direct communication between end devices and the gateways/base stations. Introducing LoRaWAN relays into a network architecture allows for easy expansion and scalability without the need for additional gateways. Relay certification testing adds to the program’s rapidly growing number of optional feature tests, such as firmware updates over the air (FUOTA) and static context header compression (SCHC), all of which are designed to ensure certified devices are fully compliant with all aspects of the LoRaWAN standard.

The authorization of DEKRA’s Atibaia, Brazil, facility (near São Paulo) as a new ATL for LoRaWAN end devices demonstrates the strong growth of LoRaWAN in the Latin America and South America regions. Having a local ATL means that members no longer must ship products outside of the continent, which offers time and cost savings when seeking LoRaWAN Certification. The move will support the area’s rapidly growing membership and is intended to promote increased device manufacturing in the region.

“DEKRA’s designation as the first LoRa Alliance authorized test lab in South and Latin America marks a significant step forward in enabling global market access for LoRaWAN devices. Our commitment to fostering a safe and secure worldwide adoption of LoRaWAN technology, while supporting local and international customers, is now strengthened by our lab in Brazil, which will continue growing with testing and certification services in the region,” explained Juan Carlos Soler, VP of Business Lines of Digital & Product Solutions at DEKRA. “Backed by our extensive testing and certification expertise, we stand ready to assist customers in obtaining LoRaWAN Certification and related electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), radiofrequency (RF) and product safety testing to ensure optimal device performance across diverse network environments.”

“Everynet has been working towards the creation of a strong and dynamic local LoRaWAN ecosystem since 2017. Today, Brazil’s ecosystem is a reality, and this initiative from the LoRa Alliance, enabling the first ATL for South America, is aligned with the vibrant scenario we observe for LoRaWAN and IoT in general in the region,” said Gustavo Zarife, Country Manager Brazil at Everynet. “As a LoRaWAN pioneer, Everynet worked together with the LoRa Alliance to expand the certification program to Brazil and Latin America. As a next step, Everynet will work closely with the local ecosystem to accelerate the adoption of LoRaWAN Certification, and, therefore, increase the quality of available devices. LoRaWAN is here to stay, and the future is bright.”

The LoRa Alliance’s new LWCS is a major step forward in terms of reducing paperwork and simplifying the certification process. Creation and use of an LWCS account provides seamless digital communications between the member certifying, the ATLs and the LoRa Alliance, reducing human error and unnecessary administrative time by automating the certification process. LWCS supports traditional certification via an ATL, certification by similarity and certification by self-testing.

The new Member Self-Testing Program gives LoRa Alliance members the option to become authorized to self-test their own devices and submit the test results directly to the LoRa Alliance to request device certification. Allowing members to conduct the testing themselves streamlines the device certification process and decreases time to market for new certified devices while maintaining the highest standards of quality and performance. To ensure the quality of the program, the LoRa Alliance will continuously audit capability for authorized members.

• Akkreditierung der DEKRA Einrichtung in Atibaia, Brasilien, als LoRa Alliance Authorized Test Lab (ATL), dem ersten ATL in Latein- und Südamerika;
• Die Einführung des LoRaWAN Web Certification System (LWCS), das den Zertifizierungsprozess nun automatisiert; und
• Die Einführung von Selbsttests der Endgeräte durch die Mitglieder der LoRa Alliance.

Diese Aktualisierungen stellen die Ausgereiftheit des LoRaWAN-Zertifizierungsprogramms unter Beweis und bieten OEMs mehrere Möglichkeiten, ihre Geräte zu zertifizieren und die Marktanforderungen an geprüfte Geräte zu erfüllen. Durch die Zertifizierung können Produkte auch auf dem LoRaWAN Marketplace präsentiert werden, einer Online-Ressource, auf der Endbenutzer zertifizierte Produkte und Services recherchieren und erwerben können.

Die Aufnahme der Relais-Funktion in die LoRaWAN-Zertifizierungstests stärkt die LoRaWAN-Zertifizierung, indem sichergestellt wird, dass die Endgeräte mit der im LoRaWAN-Standard definierten Funktion konform sind. Ein Relais ist eine wichtige Funktion für Versorgungsunternehmen und insbesondere für Satelliten, um die Reichweite von LoRaWAN-Signalen zu verstärken und zu erweitern. Dies ermöglicht die Kommunikation über größere Entfernungen und durch Hindernisse wie Gebäude und Gelände hindurch, die die direkte Kommunikation zwischen Endgeräten und den Gateways/Basisstationen behindern können. Die Einführung von LoRaWAN-Relais in eine Netzwerkarchitektur ermöglicht eine einfache Erweiterung und Skalierbarkeit, ohne dass zusätzliche Gateways erforderlich sind. Die Relais-Zertifizierungstests ergänzen die schnell wachsende Zahl optionaler Funktionstests, wie z. B. Over-the-Air-Updates von Firmware (FUOTA) und die Komprimierung des statischen Kontext-Headers (SCHC), mit denen sichergestellt werden soll, dass die zertifizierten Geräte alle Aspekte des LoRaWAN-Standards vollständig erfüllen.

Die Zulassung der DEKRA Niederlassung in Atibaia, Brasilien (in der Nähe von São Paulo), als neue ATL für LoRaWAN-Endgeräte zeigt das starke Wachstum von LoRaWAN in den Regionen Lateinamerika und Südamerika. Ein ATL vor Ort zu haben bedeutet, dass die Mitglieder ihre Produkte nicht mehr außerhalb des Kontinents versenden müssen, was Zeit- und Kosteneinsparungen bei der LoRaWAN-Zertifizierung bedeutet. Das neue LWCS der LoRa Alliance ist ein großer Schritt nach vorn, was die Reduzierung der Bürokratie und die Vereinfachung des Zertifizierungsprozesses angeht. Die Einrichtung und Nutzung eines LWCS-Kontos ermöglicht eine nahtlose digitale Kommunikation zwischen dem zertifizierenden Mitglied, den ATLs und der LoRa Alliance, wodurch menschliche Fehler und unnötiger Verwaltungsaufwand durch die Automatisierung des Zertifizierungsprozesses reduziert werden. LWCS unterstützt die herkömmliche Zertifizierung über eine ATL, die Zertifizierung durch Ähnlichkeit und die Zertifizierung durch Selbsttest.

Das neue Selbsttestprogramm für Mitglieder gibt den Mitgliedern der LoRa Alliance die Möglichkeit, ihre eigenen Geräte selbst zu testen und die Testergebnisse direkt an die LoRa Alliance zu übermitteln, um eine Gerätezertifizierung zu beantragen. Dadurch, dass die Mitglieder die Tests selbst durchführen können, wird der Prozess der Gerätezertifizierung gestrafft und die Zeit bis zur Markteinführung neuer zertifizierter Geräte verkürzt, während gleichzeitig die höchsten Qualitäts- und Leistungsstandards eingehalten werden. Um die Qualität des Programms zu gewährleisten, wird die LoRa Alliance die Fähigkeiten der autorisierten Mitglieder kontinuierlich überprüfen.

As atualizações incluem novas capacidades que agilizam o processo acelerando e facilitando a certificação

Fremont, Califórnia – 03 de junho de 2024 – A LoRa Alliance^®, a associação mundial de companhias que promove o protocolo aberto LoRaWAN^® para a internet das coisas (IoT) e redes de longo alcance e baixa potência (LPWANs) fez hoje vários anúncios sobre a ampliação e o fortalecimento do Programa de Certificação LoRaWAN disponíveis a partir de junho de 2024:

• A inclusão de testes dos parâmetros de transmissão LoRaWAN como parte da certificação de dispositivos finais;
• O credenciamento da empresa DEKRA em Atibaia, no Brasil, como laboratório autorizado a fazer testes (ATL) da LoRa Alliance, o primeiro ATL na América Latina e na América do Sul;
• O lançamento do Sistema de Certificação Web LoRaWAN (LWCS) que automatizará o processo de certificação; e
• A introdução de autotestes para membros da LoRa Alliance de dispositivos finais.

As atualizações demonstram a maturidade do Programa de Certificação LoRaWAN e fornecem aos OEMs vários métodos para certificar os seus dispositivos, satisfazendo os requisitos do mercado para dispositivos testados. A obtenção da certificação também torna possível a catalogação dos produtos no LoRaWAN Marketplace, uma fonte online na qual usuários finais podem pesquisar e achar onde comprar produtos e serviços certificados.

“É evidente que a IoT precisa de dispositivos certificados para acompanhar a implantação de bilhões de sensores,” afirmou Donna Moore, a CEO e Diretora da LoRa Alliance. “A grande vantagem da certificação – com dispositivos configurados corretamente para funcionarem como previstos – demonstra a confiança do mercado na capacidade dessa tecnologia de evoluir. A LoRaWAN já tem a maioria dos dispositivos certificados e a maior variedade de dispositivos certificados no ambiente LPWAN, e os programas anunciados hoje vêm reforçar a nossa determinação de acelerar e simplificar permanentemente o processo de certificação para os fabricantes de dispositivos finais. Além disso, nós estamos muito entusiasmados com o novo ATL no Brasil para dinamizar o processo de certificação nessa região.”

A inclusão dos parâmetros de transmissão nos testes de Certificação LoRaWAN reforça a Certificação LoRaWAN assegurando a conformidade dos dispositivos finais às características definidas no protocolo LoRaWAN. A transmissão é um parâmetro fundamental para os provedores e para os satélites em particular no sentido de amplificar e ampliar o alcance dos sinais LoRaWAN, viabilizando a comunicação em grandes distâncias através de obstáculos como prédios e superfícies que possam entravar a comunicação direta entre dispositivos finais e os pontos de acesso ou gateways/estações de base. Introduzir transmissões LoRaWAN em uma arquitetura de redes facilita a ampliação e a redimensionabilidade sem necessidade de pontos de acesso ou gateways adicionais. Os testes de certificação de transmissão somam-se ao crescente número de testes opcionais do programa, tais como atualizações de firmware no ar (FUOTA) e compressão de cabeçalho em contexto estático (SCHC), que foram todos concebidos para assegurar a plena compatibilidade dos dispositivos finais com todos os aspeitos do protocolo LoRaWAN.

A autorização da empresa DEKRA em Atibaia perto de São Paulo no Brasil como novo ATL para dispositivos finais LoRaWAN demonstra o forte crescimento da LoRaWAN nas regiões da América Latina e da América do Sul. Dispor de um ATL local significa que os nossos membros não precisarão mais mandar os seus produtos para fora do continente, diminuindo custos e prazos no processo de Certificação LoRaWAN. Essa mudança favorecerá a adesão crescente de novos membros nessa área e promoverá o aumento da fabricação de dispositivos na região.

O novo LWCS da LoRa Alliance é um grande avanço em termos de diminuição da papelada e de simplificação do processo de certificação. A criação e o uso de uma conta LWCS possibilita comunicações digitais contínuas entre membros de certificação, os ATLs e a LoRa Alliance, diminuindo erros humanos e prazos administrativos desnecessários com a automação do processo de certificação. O LWCS é compatível com a certificação tradicional via ATL, a certificação por analogia e a certificação por autoteste.

O novo programa de autotestes dará aos membros da LoRa Alliance a possibilidade de obterem a autorização para fazerem autotestes dos seus próprios dispositivos e submeterem os resultados diretamente à LoRa Alliance para fins de certificação dos dispositivos. Permitir que os nossos membros realizem os próprios testes agilizará o processo de certificação de dispositivos, diminuindo o prazo de comercialização de dispositivos recém-certificados e mantendo ao mesmo tempo os mais altos padrões de qualidade e desempenho. Para garantir a qualidade do programa, a LoRa Alliance continuará com as auditorias sobre a capacitação dos membros autorizados.

Fremont, Calif. – May 16, 2024 – The LoRa Alliance^®, the global association of companies backing the open LoRaWAN^® standard for internet of things (IoT) low-power wide-area networks (LPWANs), today announced that Alex Khorram, Sr. Director, 5G Product, Verizon Business, and Joey Hiller, Senior Technical Director at the Helium Foundation, have joined its board of directors. Leaders in their respective markets, both new board members bring deep backgrounds in networking and a strong commitment to the LoRaWAN standard. The Alliance also announced that Stefano Landi has been elected the new board representative from Amazon Web Services (AWS) and STMicroelectronics’ Anicet Giaimo has been re-elected for a new term. This renewed commitment from these valuable board members is indicative of LoRaWAN’s continued strength in the market.

The new members round out the board’s strong background in networking types and technologies. These board-level organizations have been critical to development of the standard and providing the infrastructure that has enabled LoRaWAN’s rapid growth, alongside our full global membership.

Addition of MultiTech CEO will further strengthen and accelerate global LoRaWAN deployments for industrial internet of things (IIoT)

His extensive experience and leadership in the IoT industry make him a valuable addition to the LoRa Alliance board. L’innovation constante de la norme ouverte LoRaWAN, à la fois robuste et hautement performante, est le moteur principal derrière le déploiement LPWAN le plus étendu au niveau  mondial, tant sur les réseaux terrestres que non terrestres (NTN).

Grâce à cela, LoRaWAN est devenu le leader du LPWAN, avec un nombre record de déploiements soutenant une mise à l’échelle dynamique dans le domaine de l’IoT, touchant de multiples marchés finaux. La feuille de route expose également le développement programmé de la norme ouverte LoRaWAN pour les communications IoT.

La feuille de route détaille les améliorations envisagées de plusieurs aspects essentiels déjà intégrés dans la norme LoRaWAN :

 

Expansion des marchés adressables

• Optimiser encore davantage la connectivité pour le NTN LoRaWAN, notamment en améliorant l’étalement de spectre par saut de fréquence à longue portée (LR-FHSS), permet à LoRaWAN de dépasser largement les exigences prévues en matière de capacité réseau pour l’IoT massif.
• Optimiser les relais pour accroître la portée des signaux LoRaWAN dans les environnements bruyants ou physiquement exigeants, afin de faciliter le déploiement des capteurs dans n’importe quel emplacement.
• La découverte du réseau rapide et à basse consommation ouvre de nouvelles perspectives de déploiement là où la couverture n’est pas permanente, comme avec les passerelles mobiles, permettant ainsi des applications « walk-by » ou « drive-by » qui ajoutent une valeur considérable, notamment dans des marchés clés tels que les services publics, où LoRaWAN se distingue par le volume de déploiements.

 

Hyperscalabilité

• Faciliter les déploiements en simplifiant la gestion des profils et la migration des appareils.
• Faciliter le transport d’identifiants selon la norme GS1, tels que les RFID, les codes-barres et les codes de produits électroniques (EPC) sur LoRaWAN, ceci afin de permettre aux appareils connectés via LoRaWAN d’assurer l’identification des produits et des actifs de manière efficace.
• Simplifier l’intégration des appareils LoRaWAN aux réseaux LoRaWAN en automatisant le téléchargement des profils d’appareils. Ce processus implique la requête automatique des profils d’appareils à partir de répertoires en ligne via une API standard, s’inspirant des travaux antérieurs de LoRa Alliance en matière de QR code.

 

Gestion de cœur de réseau

• Améliorer l’interopérabilité des appareils en standardisant les interfaces du serveur d’application et des passerelles.

 

Certification

• Gagner la confiance des clients en ajoutant la possibilité de mises à jour du logiciel via la voie radio et en intégrant des relais aux essais de certification LoRaWAN, offrant ainsi aux fabricants d’appareils finaux la validation des performances de ces fonctionnalités.
• Assurer aux utilisateurs finaux l’interopérabilité des appareils provenant de différents fournisseurs en intégrant des tests d’interopérabilité avancés à la suite des essais de certification LoRaWAN. Ces évaluations garantiront que les appareils de divers fabricants peuvent échanger et utiliser efficacement leurs données respectives.

 

Développement de la couche physique/liaison

• Intégrer la crypto-agilité à LoRaWAN, permettant ainsi l’utilisation de diverses suites cryptographiques actuelles et futures comme des extensions à la couche liaison LoRaWAN, sans nécessiter une évolution de cette dernière.

 

Alors que l’IoT est en passe de passer de millions à des milliards de connexions, comme prévu dans les années à venir, l’évolutivité du réseau est un élément crucial pris en compte dans la norme actuelle et qui devrait être amélioré dans le futur. Les compteurs intelligents représentent un marché clé où LoRaWAN s’est imposé comme leader, et la spécification actuelle offre une capacité réseau étendue pour répondre aux besoins du marché. En réponse à la croissance exponentielle des connexions IoT via des satellites et d’autres technologies NTN, LoRa Alliance a développé le LR-FHSS pour une connectivité massive de LoRaWAN à l’échelle mondiale. L’exemple du réseau ZENNER illustre la remarquable capacité de LoRaWAN en termes de haute capacité. Avec près de 7,5 millions de capteurs opérant sur plus de 100 000 passerelles réparties dans 15 pays, ce réseau prend en charge divers secteurs tels que les fournisseurs d’énergie, l’industrie du bâtiment, les municipalités, les services publics et les opérations industrielles. Cet exemple démontre clairement que la norme LoRaWAN répond efficacement aux exigences actuelles en matière de capacité pour l’IoT.

La innovación continua de este estándar abierto potente y de alta capacidad ha llevado a elevar la cantidad global de despliegues LPWAN en redes terrestres y no terrestres (NTN).

Fremont (California), 16 de abril de 2024. — LoRa Alliance^®, la asociación global de empresas que respaldan el estándar abierto LoRaWAN^® para las redes de largo alcance y baja potencia (LPWAN) del internet de las cosas (IoT), ha anunciado hoy su hoja de ruta, destacando la evolución de LoRaWAN, desde la construcción e interconexión de redes en línea con el objetivo de conseguir que la tecnología sea más rápida y fácil de implementar. Gracias a ello LoRaWAN lidera el sector del LPWAN con el mayor número de despliegues que fomentan el crecimiento activo del IoT a través de numerosos mercados. La hoja de ruta también presenta el desarrollo planificado del estándar abierto LoRaWAN para las comunicaciones IoT.

La hoja de ruta describe las mejoras previstas de varias funciones fundamentales ya incorporadas en el estándar LoRaWAN:

 

Ampliación de los mercados de destino

• Mejora de la conectividad para NTN a través de LoRaWAN. Por ejemplo, una mayor optimización del espectro ensanchado por salto de frecuencia de largo alcance (LR-FHSS), que permite que LoRaWAN supere con creces los requisitos de capacidad de red previstos para el IoT masivo.
• Mejoras de retransmisión que aumenten el alcance de las señales LoRaWAN en entornos de mucho ruido o físicamente complicados, para permitir el despliegue de sensores en cualquier lugar.
• Descubrimiento de una red rápida y de bajo consumo, que ofrece nuevas opciones de despliegue allí donde la cobertura no es permanente, como las gateways móviles, permitiendo aplicaciones walk-by o drive-by y añadiendo un valor significativo para mercados clave, como el de los servicios públicos, donde LoRaWAN domina en cuanto a volumen de despliegue.

 

Hiperescalabilidad

• Simplificación de las implementaciones facilitando la gestión de perfiles y la migración de dispositivos.
• Facilitar el transporte de identificadores conformes a la norma GS1, tales como los RFID, los códigos de barras y los códigos de productos electrónicos (EPC) mediante la red LoRaWAN, para permitir a los dispositivos conectados a través de LoRaWAN garantizar la identificación de los productos y los activos de manera eficaz.
• Simplificar la integración de los dispositivos LoRaWAN a las redes de LoRaWAN automatizando la descarga de los perfiles de dispositivo. Dicho proceso implica recabar automáticamente perfiles de dispositivo desde repertorios en línea a través de una interfaz de programación de aplicaciones (API) estándar, que se inspira de los logros obtenidos anteriormente por parte de la LoRa Alliance en materia de códigos QR.

 

Gestión de redes centrales

• Refuerzo de la interoperabilidad de los dispositivos normalizando las interfaces del servidor de aplicaciones y de la gateway.

 

Certificación

• Aumentar la confianza del cliente mediante la incorporación de actualizaciones de firmware por aire, integrando relés a las pruebas de certificación LoRaWAN, permitiendo con ello a los fabricantes de dispositivos finales validar el funcionamiento de estas funciones.
• Ofrecer a los usuarios finales confianza en la interoperabilidad de los dispositivos de distintos proveedores añadiendo pruebas avanzadas de interoperabilidad al paquete de pruebas de certificación LoRaWAN. Estos tests validarán el intercambio y uso eficaz de la información entre dispositivos de fabricantes diferentes.

 

Desarrollo de la capa física/de enlace

• Integrar la criptoagilidad en LoRaWAN, permitiendo así el uso de distintas suites de cifrado actuales y futuras como extensiones a la capa de enlace de LoRaWAN, sin que sea necesario que ésta última evolucione.

 

A medida que el IoT pasa de millones a miles de millones de conexiones, como está previsto que occurirá en los próximos años, la capacidad de la red para evolucionar es una cuestión clave que el estándar actual resuelve. Además, se anticipa que esta capacidad seguirá mejorando en el futuro. La medición inteligente es un mercado clave en el que LoRaWAN se ha establecido con una posición de liderazgo, gracias a que la especificación actual ofrece abundante capacidad de red para responder a las necesidades del mercado. Consciente del crecimiento de las conexiones IoT que se activarán a través de satélite y otras NTN, LoRa Alliance ha desarrollado el LR-FHSS para conseguir una conectividad LoRaWAN masiva y global. Como parte de su hoja de ruta prevista, LoRa Alliance seguirá mejorando y ampliando el estándar en función de las necesidades del mercado y los nuevos casos de uso.

 

Un caso que ejemplifica la actual alta capacidad de LoRaWAN es la red ZENNER, con casi 7,5 millones de sensores funcionando en más de 100.000 gateways en 15 países para dar servicio a proveedores de energía, la industria de la vivienda, ciudades y municipios, servicios públicos municipales y operaciones industriales. Como muestra este ejemplo, el estándar LoRaWAN responde fácilmente y de forma eficaz a las necesidades actuales de capacidad del IoT.

April 2024 – Die LoRa Alliance^®, der weltweite Zusammenschluss von Unternehmen, die den offenen LoRaWAN^®-Standard für Niedrigenergie-Weitverkehrsnetze (LPWANs) im Internet der Dinge (IoT) unterstützen, hat heute ihren formellen Strategieplan vorgestellt. Er umfasst die LoRaWAN-Entwicklung vom Aufbau und der Vernetzung der Netzwerke bis zur schnelleren und einfacheren Umsetzung der Technologie. Diese Anstrengungen haben LoRaWAN dank der überragenden Anzahl an Bereitstellungspunkten, die die aktive Skalierung des Internets der Dinge in zahlreichen Endmärkten unterstützen, zur führenden LPWAN-Technik gemacht. Der Strategieplan umfasst darüber hinaus die Entwicklung des offenen LoRaWAN-Standards zur IoT-Kommunikation.

Der Strategieplan beschreibt die geplanten Verbesserungen mehrerer kritischer Punkte, die bereits Teil des LoRaWAN-Standards sind:

 

Erweiterung der Wachstumsmärkte

• Verbesserte Konnektivität für NTN LoRaWAN, z.B. durch eine weitere Optimierung des Langstrecken-Frequenzsprungverfahrens (Long Range–Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum, LR-FHSS), mit der LoRaWAN die vom IoT geforderte Netzwerkkapazität weit übertreffen kann.
• Verbesserte Relais, die die Reichweite der LoRaWAN-Signale in rauschenden oder physisch schwierigen Umgebungen erhöhen, so dass Sensoren überall eingesetzt werden können.
• Erweiterung um eine schnelle und energiesparende Netzwerkerkennung mit neuen Bereitstellungsoptionen in Bereichen mit nicht permanenter Abdeckung, z.B. mobile Gateways, die die Verwendung im Vorbeigehen oder -fahren ermöglichen und den Mehrwert für Schlüsselmärkte beträchtlich erhöhen, z.B. für Versorgungsunternehmen, die überwiegend LoRaWAN nutzen.

 

Hyperskalierbarkeit

• Leichtere Bereitstellung mit einfacherer Verwaltung der Geräteprofile und Gerätemigration.
• Übertragung von GS1-kompatiblen Identifikatoren, wie RFID, Barcodes, elektronischen Produktcodes (EPC) über LoRaWAN, um den Anschluss von Geräten über LoRaWAN zur Produkt/Assetidentifikation zu ermöglichen.
• Möglichkeit zur Integration von LoRaWAN-Endgeräten über LoRaWAN-Netzwerke mit automatischem Download des Geräteprofils, das die Geräteprofile automatisch mithilfe einer Standard-API aus dem Online-Repository abruft, das Ganze basierend auf dem QR-Code der LoRa Alliance.

 

Verwaltung der Kernnetzwerke

• Stärkere Gerätekompatibilität durch standardisierte Anwendungsserver und Gateway-Schnittstellen.

 

Zertifizierung

• Stärkung des Kundenvertrauens durch Firmware-Updates per Funk und Weiterleitung zur LoRaWAN-Zertifizierungsprüfung, so dass die Endgerätehersteller die Leistung dieser Funktionen prüfen können.
• Stärkeres Vertrauen der Endverbraucher in die Kompatibilität von Geräten verschiedener Hersteller durch erweiterte Kompatibilitätstests in der LoRaWAN-Zertifizierungsprüfungs-Suite. Diese Prüfungen werden belegen, dass Geräte verschiedener Hersteller die jeweiligen Informationen effektiv austauschen und nutzen können.

 

Physische/Verbindungsschicht-Entwicklung

• Einführung der Kryptoagilität in LoRaWAN, um die Vielzahl der aktuellen und zukünftigen Krypto-Pakete als Ergänzung zur LoRaWAN-Verbindungsschicht nutzen und diese verbessern zu können.

Da die Anzahl der IoT-Anschlüsse laut den Prognosen in den nächsten Jahren von Millionen auf Milliarden ansteigen wird, ist die Skalierbarkeit Netzwerken ein wichtiger Punkt im aktuellen Standard, der für zukünftige Verbesserungen vorgesehen ist. Intelligente Verbrauchsmessungen sind ein wichtiger Markt, in dem LoRaWAN dank der aktuellen Spezifikation mit ihrer hohen, den Marktanforderungen entsprechenden Netzwerkkapazität eine marktführende Position eingenommen hat. Angesichts der steigenden Zahl an IoT-Verbindungen durch Satelliten und andere NTN hat die Alliance LR-FHSS für eine massive globale LoRaWAN-Konnektivität entwickelt. Im Rahmen ihres Strategieplans wird die LoRa Alliance weiter an der Verbesserung und Erweiterung des Standards entsprechend den Marktanforderungen und neuen Anwendungsfällen arbeiten.

Continuous innovation of the robust and high-capacity LoRaWAN open standard has led to the most LPWAN deployments globally across terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks (NTNs)

Fremont, Calif. – April 16, 2024 – The LoRa Alliance^®, the global association of companies backing the open LoRaWAN^® standard for the internet of things (IoT) low-power wide-area networks (LPWANs), today launched its formal roadmap, which highlights LoRaWAN’s evolution from building and interconnecting networks through its focus on making the technology faster and easier to deploy, work that has successfully made LoRaWAN the leading LPWAN with the most deployments supporting IoT’s active scaling across numerous end markets. The roadmap also showcases the planned development of the LoRaWAN open standard for IoT communications.

“LoRaWAN is a purpose-built networking technology to support massive IoT,” said Donna Moore, CEO and chairwoman of the LoRa Alliance. “The members of the LoRa Alliance have been diligent in their work to lay the foundation strategically evolving LoRaWAN to achieve the significant scaling that is taking place in IoT. Not only is our technology best of breed and proven across multiple multimillion-sensor deployments, but it is also backed by the largest ecosystem with the greatest number and diversity of certified devices. Further, it offers the widest variety of deployment options across terrestrial networks and satellite NTNs, including hybrid networking approaches. The roadmap outlines the planned enhancements of several critical features already incorporated in the LoRaWAN standard:

 

Expanding Addressable Markets

• Enhances connectivity for NTN LoRaWAN through, for example, further optimization of the long range–frequency hopping spread spectrum (LR-FHSS), which enables LoRaWAN to far surpass the projected network-capacity requirements of massive IoT.
• Make relay enhancements that increase LoRaWAN signals’ reach in noisy or physically challenging environments to allow sensors to be deployed anywhere.
• Add fast and low-power network discovery, which offers new deployment options where coverage is not permanent, like mobile gateways, allowing walk-by or drive-by applications and adding significant value for key markets like utilities, where LoRaWAN dominates in terms of deployment volumes.

 

Hyperscalability

• Simplify deployments with easier device profile management and device migration.
• Carry GS1-compliant identifiers, such as RFIDs, barcodes, electronic product codes (EPC) over LoRaWAN, to enable devices connected via LoRaWAN to be used for product/asset identification.
• Facilitate LoRaWAN end-device onboarding by LoRaWAN networks with automated device profile downloads, which automatically request the device profiles from online repositories using a standard API, building on prior work of LoRa Alliance QR code.

 

Core Network Management

• Strengthen device interoperability by standardizing the application server and gateway interfaces.

 

Certification

• Drive customer confidence through the addition of firmware updates over the air and relay to LoRaWAN certification testing, allowing end-device manufacturers to validate the performance of these features.
• Give end users confidence in cross-vendor device interoperability by adding advanced interoperability testing into the LoRaWAN certification test suite. This testing will validate that devices from different manufacturers can effectively exchange and make use of each other’s information.

 

Physical/Link Layer Development

• Introduce crypto-agility to LoRaWAN, so the variety of current and future crypto-suites can be used as add-ons with the LoRaWAN Link Layer without having to evolve the latter.

 

As IoT moves from millions to billions of connections, as is forecast in the next few years, network scalability is a key consideration that is addressed in the current standard and slated for future enhancements. Smart metering is one key market where LoRaWAN has established a market-leading position with the current specification delivering abundant network capacity to address market requirements. Recognizing the growth in IoT connections that will be enabled by satellite and other NTNs, the Alliance developed LR-FHSS for massive, global LoRaWAN connectivity. As part of its planned roadmap, the LoRa Alliance will continue to enhance and expand the standard based on market needs and new use cases.

One example that illustrates LoRaWAN’s existing high-capacity capability is the ZENNER network, with nearly 7.5 million sensors running on more than 100,000 gateways in 15 countries to support energy providers, the housing industry, cities and municipalities, municipal utilities and industrial operations. As this example shows, the LoRaWAN standard easily addresses today’s IoT capacity requirements.

Fremont, Californie – 3 avril 2024 – LoRa Alliance^®, l’association mondiale des entreprises qui soutient la norme ouverte LoRaWAN^® pour les réseaux étendus à basse consommation (LPWAN) dédiés à l’Internet des objets (IoT), a annoncé aujourd’hui la version préliminaire du programme de sa conférence LoRaWAN Live Munich, qui aura lieu les 19 et 20 juin au Westin Grand Munich. L’événement porte sur tous les aspects de LoRaWAN, la technologie leader du LPWAN au niveau mondial, tout en abordant le fait que les entreprises s’adaptent aux multiples usages et aux déploiements sur de nombreux sites et installations. Le programme est principalement axé sur l’Internet industriel des objets (IIoT) à travers des déploiements, des cas d’utilisation, la technologie LoRaWAN ainsi que la capacité à obtenir un réel retour sur investissement – via une série de panels, de présentations et d’activités de réseautage.
