IoT joint venture SENS equips Viticulture against late frost damage
In 2016 frost damage in Austria amounted to 200 million euros. Weather stations operated with LoRaWANTM which warn in time of late frost and heat waves can prevent excessive damages. The data transmitted via the SENS LoRaWAN™ network forms the basis for new, more accurate frost forecasting models. Due to the efficient data transmission, the low sensor costs and the long battery life of the measuring devices, it is possible to bring a multiple of the previously used sensors into the field and trigger frost and heat warnings by SMS or email. A demo operation for frost warning is currently running in the Kamptal and the Wachau with the wineries Bründlmayer and Müller and the secondary school and federal office for viticulture and fruit growing in Klosterneuburg.
