World’s largest LoRaWAN® smart street lighting project just launched

Sydney-based National Narrowband Network Company (NNNCo), the 100% IoT telco, has signed a contract with technology provider Wellness TechGroup, to provide IoT network coverage to 70,000 smart streetlights in Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay.

The project will cover 200 square kilometres and provide smart street lighting to more than 1.3 million people, improving community and road safety, and reducing carbon emissions by up to 80%. This initiative will also establish an infrastructure-based network that can accommodate other smart city initiatives.

What is the net environmental impact of dirt-cheap massive-scale IoT?

This discussion is missing something, of course; IoT is not supposed to be written about as an environmental risk. The idea that billions of disposable trackers might litter the planet is an alarmist angle, arguably, on a tech-for-good story. Because, in most cases, the mission to attach sensors across all of public and private society is geared to drive efficiencies, and in many cases those efficiencies are directly or indirectly linked to energy-burning actions.

LoRaWAN – Most Common Applications and Use Cases

The Internet of Things (IoT) describes the network of millions of devices around the world that are connected to the internet and which measure, monitor, and provide rich data. Today IoT consists of many loosely connected networks, each of which solves its own problems. For example, in an office building, several LoRaWAN based IoT solutions could be deployed at once: one to control air conditioners, another for heating systems, lighting, security, and other IoT applications.

These IoT networks can operate according to different standards and combining them into one network is not a trivial task. Low-power wide-area networking (LPWAN) technologies are capable of supporting a large number of Internet of Things use cases. While several LPWAN technologies exist, Long Range (LoRa technology), and its network architecture LoRaWAN, is currently the most adopted technology. LoRa provides a range of physical layer communication settings, such as bandwidth, spreading factor, coding rate, and transmission frequency. These settings impact throughput, reliability, and communication range.

IoT solutions and LoRaWAN, allies for better Indoor Air Quality and CO2 monitoring

Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) has been a public health concern since the industrial revolution. It is more important than ever to monitor it. In the past years, government regulations were implemented to reduce CO2 emissions and improve the health and comfort of occupants of buildings, such as the BACS decree in Europe and ASHRAE guidelines in the United States. Most recently, the COVID-19 epidemic has made air quality indoors even more of a priority.

LoRaWAN, as a communication protocol, provides flexibility for the managers of buildings to enable the Internet of Things (IoT) and deploy IAQ integrations.

LoRaWAN recognised as international standard by the United Nations’ International Telecommunications Union (ITU)

The long-range communication technology can enable a variety of IoT applications for industrial farms, buildings and smart cities.

LoRaWAN, the proprietary low-power wide-area network (LPWAN) technology, has been recognised as an international standard by the United Nations.

This comes after years of work by the LoRa Alliance, a non-profit group of global companies that develop and promote the LoRaWAN networking protocol as the global standard for internet of things (IoT) networks.

Use unlicensed LPWANs for cost-effective & secure massive industrial IoT

This article introduces Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) technologies for the Internet of Things. LPWANs can be divided into the licensed and unlicensed spectrum. Under the unlicensed spectrum we find the LoRaWAN® standard; a cost-effective, low battery, long-range technology specifically designed to serve massive industrial low-critical IoT. Thanks to its easy network roll-out with flexible, secure connectivity models, LoRaWAN allows for a rapid global use case development to benefit cities, enterprises, rural areas and large industries on either public, private or hybrid models. The global LoRaWAN standard is promoted by a group of IoT companies called the LoRa Alliance®. The LoRa Alliance is a non-profit organization representing over 400 member companies developing and operating LoRaWAN equipment from silicon to solutions.

LoRaWAN offers proven IoT utilities integrations

Typically, users of LoRaWAN benefit most from it being long-range and using very little power. Utilities, however, gain added benefit from LoRaWAN’s ability to communicate through concrete barriers or even underground at a very low cost and across many IoT applications.

As LoRaWAN technology further expands its global footprint, utilities broadly remain the leading application for low power wide area networking (LPWAN) technologies and will occupy the largest market segment over the next five years, a market study by IoT Analytics shows. Representing 30% of the installed base by 2025, utilities count by far the most use cases and will continue to do so.

LoRa Alliance and OMS Group integrate smart metering standards

OMS Group will provide its Open Metering System smart metering language for use on LoRa Alliance’s LoRaWAN specification. Proof of concepts conducted by the two organisations have proved the interoperability of the two standards on all levels, including data platforms and connected end devices on the same or different LoRaWAN networks, according to the companies.

Donna Moore, the CEO of the LoRa Alliance, said the combined use of the two standards “…is absolutely essential to achieving massive scale for the IoT.

Laying the foundation to accelerate the enterprise IoT journey

One of the core challenges of bringing the benefits of the Internet of Things (IoT) to life is getting started—how can enterprises successfully begin to adopt IoT when the solutions needed are so specific to a given business or business case, and off-the-shelf options have not yet sufficiently evolved? And how can the emerging technology evolve when getting started is so difficult?

Two sister organizations in Amsterdam seek to address both of those challenges together. One, The Things Network, is a not-for-profit organization that offers open-source tools for enterprises to build their own IoT solution on a low-power, LoRaWAN network that they own and operate. Extend Building Automation and Control with LoRaWAN

Buildings and even entire campuses worldwide are being renovated and repurposed like never before to create healthier, more efficient, and sustainable environments. As systems evolve, they also place greater demands on building management systems (BMS), which handle everything from light, temperature, air, and water to security and servicing.

 

The global standard communications protocol for building automation and control (BAC) is BACnet. As with many legacy systems, BACnet is hardwired. Consequently, it’s expensive to install, hard to expand with respect to coverage, and even harder to add functionality that aligns with emerging building requirements that monitor the cleanliness of air, personal safety, room usage, and social distancing. What is the FUOTA standard and why do we need it?
The ability to provide Firmware Updates Over the Air (FUOTA) is critical to several IoT application performance and device lifecycle requirements, including implementing bug fixes, patching security vulnerabilities and supporting new features.

FUOTA support provides future-proofing of connected device deployments, ensuring that devices will continue to operate over long lifetimes. FUOTA can be performed as a unicast or multicast function. However, the greatest benefit is found in efficiently and securely delivering updates over the air to many devices at one time in a multicast fashion.

The Sunset of 2G and 3G: What It Means for IoT Connectivity

As 5G continues to roll out globally and 6G enters its early stages of development, the end of 2G and 3G is drawing near. When it does, it will have a significant impact on IoT deployments using those technologies. According to a recent report by James Brehm & Associates, the sunsetting of 2G and 3G will affect more than 50% of all IoT devices connected via cellular.[1]

In the U.S., AT&T plans to shut down its 3G network by February 2022, T-Mobile will shut down Sprint’s 3G network on January 1, 2022, followed by its 3G UMTS network in April 2022. While Verizon hasn’t set a date yet, it won’t last much longer if the other major operators’ decisions are any indicator. 2G networks may outlast 3G due to various IoT use cases, but operators are actively planning their eventual sunset as well.

LoRaWAN Revamps Switzerland’s Postal On-demand Service

Traditional postal services are facing increasing pressures.

On the one hand, they must respond to increasing competition as customers demand fast delivery, low prices, and excellent service to accommodate smart city lifestyles.

On the other hand, postal companies are struggling to maintain post offices that are becoming less profitable to run, particularly in rural areas that may be difficult to reach due to a lack of infrastructure. This is exacerbated by national regulations that may require companies to serve a certain percentage of citizens with a defined level of service.

These were the challenges faced by Swiss Post, Switzerland’s national postal service. The public company plays a central role in the lives of the country’s citizens, delivering 7 million letters and 500,000 parcels every day.

Swiss Post envisioned a simple device based on IoT technology that would make it easy for customers to order postal supplies and services. The device relies on Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) technology for low device battery consumption and has devices that can communicate over long distances to serve rural customers. This was essential as the system would cover distances too great for the usual cellular network technologies.
